Generation of this footer is certainly something I disable whenever
I install AVG Free edition for someome, for all the obvious reasons.

I think the purpose of this is more about advertising than in trying
to instill confidence about the message content in the recipient, and
to that extent I think it's not so bad - especially when you consider
the benefit to end users in escaping from the clutches of Symantec and
the like.
