I tried to do a rough sum a few days after it happened on the sort of  
energy involved in the collapse of the towers simply from gravity. I  
forget the details but it looked like the level of energy in a small  
tactical nuclear bomb. The ground will shake and nearby buildings  
WILL collapse with a LOT of noise.

Remember you had ~ a million tons dropping a few hundred metres and  
there was a lot of underground shopping malls and a subway.
