i used to like edlin when i did phone tech support years ago. it's a
crappy editor but you can tell the user EXACTLY what keys to push and
it will just work...in a notepad style editor, they may have moved the
cursor and not bothered telling you so any edits you tell them to make
will just make things worse.
vi's good for that too. you can drive it by phone, and it's too scary
for novice users to do anything but exactly what you tell them to.
(but, IMO, vi's good for everything. vi is one of the main reasons i
don't like GUI mail clients...none of them have editors anywhere near as
good as vi)
