Is that optimal line length measured in pixels, characters or words?

Because there is not necessarily a correspondence between them.

One of the buttons I most use on my browsers (konqueror) is the button to
increase and decrease font size. I have laptop with 15" screen with 1920x1200
pixels. The browser window usually takes up most but not all of the screen.
The default font size is readable, but a bit on the small size. I like it
that way as I can fit more on the screen for browsing and skim reading. When
ever I come across a page that I actually want to read (it does happen :-) )
the first thing I do is hit the increase font size button a couple of times.

Should the optimal line length be measured in pixels, the default font size
for John Smith's web browser, the default size for my web browser or the font
size at which I read the text?

Gordon
