This thread was about saving water, and my comments related to a
comparative observation, and thoughts on conserving water through
alternative ground coverings as used in other sports.

A casual scan of golf courses via Google Earth brings this into sharp
relief: especially in drought-affected areas of Australia such as
Canberra. Most courses in the region are greener than the ovals that
are used for school sports. There is no denying that golf courses
consume a lot of water.

I'm a casual golfer, but much prefer to play in places where water is
in profligate abundance (like Scotland).

Nonetheless, you raise an interesting point, Marghanita: what value
should we place on water used in this way, and does it take
precedence over water used for other interactions with nature?

Warmly
