Some of us oldies were taught to read phonetically by sounding out  
the letters in the word. I often wondered why as it seemed perhaps,  
that even most words,  didn't work that way. I blame it on the  
problems I always had with spelling, until the invention of spelling  
checkers which kept showing me when I was wrong.
