It's an Americanism, with the accent on the first syllable, too. Sort 
of like Australianisms which shorten words and add -ie or changing 
the r in names to z and dropping the rest, like Dazza.

As far as replying, I ignore them. I made the mistake of signing up 
once and people who have found my name there have subsequently sent 
me invitations. It hasn't happened enough for me to bother with the 
time to go back and remove my details.
