I've converted totally to Mobiles in the last three years, after
swearing in 1998 I'd never have another one again!

I've posted about the reduction in my phone costs from $900-$1000 a
month down to around $100 a month previously. Yes, 10% of my
original bill, we talk MORE, we have more features, functions and
services, I even have mobile internet which worked really well in the
bush the other day, and i pay a fraction of the cost.

In fact the only landline I have access to, costs me more than 2/3rds
of my Three Handsets mobile bill.

There is religion about which brand to buy. But really it comes down
to this. If you are familiar with an operating system, you tend to
want to stick to it. So I've stuck with Sony Ericcson. The only
reason we chose the Z1010 in the first place was because my
co-producer already had a SE phone (different model) and we wanted to
keep all the chargers and adapters and kits plugable.

However, SE decided in their wisdom to change all the connectors and
memory cards in the new generation phones, so in the upgrade last
month (which cost me nothing) we lost the compatibility. Still, my
new phone now has 2 GB of ram on it :)

Nokia are just as good. They make phone calls, you can receive phone
calls, and it has a headphone cable too :) What more do you want!

I'd not go with an LG or Samsung. I find the technology quality a lot
lower and the designs somewhat cumbersome. However, these two brands
appeal to the fashion conscious, so if you are into "look" then go
with one of these.

If you want a phone that feels good and works well I just got K610i's
and they are nice to use. The keyboard is a bit small, but you get
use to it. The Z1010 was a clamshell, which had advantages, such as
a clock on the outside you could always see. The 610i turns off the
screen and you can't see the clock!

I use a cabled headset about 99.9% of the time. I hate holding the
mobile to my ear, it seems to cause you to shout because the phones
are generally so small and the speakers aren't that great for air
transfer of sound. Headset gets the sound in your ear and you speak
a lot softer.

With they'd make a bluetooth ear clip that took a normal 3.5mm headphone :)

I use my phone more and more for mobile Internet. It's now quite
reliable unlike a year ago. The pricing plans are good. Cheaper
than a landline and DSL service, and getting close to the same
speeds. At any rate performance is not an issue.

But I doubt I'd run a server and route over one. I presume the
network providers won't cooperate with such an idea. Although I may
be trailing something like this soon.

Sadly they are counting data in both directions and the costs are
higher if you exceed your plans "caps" but data counting and
monitoring is very easy. Although again, at 50 cents a megabyte for
mobile use, it's not "that" bad if you MUST have access.

Given that data is only transmitted or received when you do
something, you can connect and stay online all day. I ran my laptop
battery flat before my phone battery!
