Yes, but the time slot can be extended by adding extra elements to allow for
code searching beyond the normal time-period.  We are only talking about
milliseconds of buffering.

That's what the Nortel "Boomer cells" were all about with CDMA mobiles in
the bush.

The theoretical limit for phones used to be only 50kms from memory (more
like 35km in practice), but the boomers were supposed to double that.   I
had doubts at the time, but when I checked with an independent technical
guru in Queensland, I was assured that they did work.
