Hi Tom,
Please pass on the following comments.
1)
A major change in ICT education since the last review is the large
increase in the use of vendor certification programmes.
It should be considered if, and under what terms, holders of such
certifications should be considered ICT professionals by the ACS.
For example, is a TAFE computing course and the Cisco CCIE
acceptable for a telecommunications-focused ICT Professional.
2)
The field of systems administration seems to be ignored, yet there
are obviously systems administration professionals in the wild.
It should be considered what education and experience is required
for the ACS to class a systems administrator as a ICT Professional.
Just because universities don't teach systems administration
doesn't meant that they don't exist (especially when uni IT
departments employ sysadmins themselves).
3)
The current mandatory topics have tangential relevance. I can
evaluate their interpersonal skills for myself, it's their technical
skills I need you to attest to.
The topic of Risk Management should be dropped. This is an economics
topic, closely related to insurance and hedging. Perhaps the concerns
of your group would be better addressed by requiring Configuration
and Change Control as a mandatory topic.
4)
Why is not ability to program and operate a computer mandatory?
It should not be possible to be a ICT Professional by taking
only IT management topics at university.
Best wishes, Glen
