it's not an "advance fee fraud" (aka nigerian 419 scam, which pretends
you have a lot of money coming to you if only you pay the taxes,
official duties, security company, and more more more...a never-ending
stream of "just one more" payments until even the stupidest victim
realises they've been conned and gives up).
it is a scam, though. the idea is that they're pretending to want to
book a room in your hotel and pay for it by credit card. for some
implausible reason, they want to pay you much more than the room costs
and have you send the remainder back to them by wire transfer or
something. in short, it's a way of getting dumb or naive hotel/motel
operators to convert their stolen credit card number into cash in their
pocket.
i've heard of it being done by targetted phone calls or letters before,
not by scattershot spam. sending it to someone who doesn't own or
operate a hotel doesn't make much sense.
