I think that this is actually a fair comment - there was great  
utility of having a god in this area: it meant that boundaries were  
set, and things either worked, or could be blamed on the sysadmin.  
Nowadays, it's not quite open-slather, but it is harder to see how a  
degree of professional competency is the overriding principle in many  
systems.

Now that the gods are no longer worshipped, a state of anarchy is  
creeping in. Finding the person responsible for making autocratic  
decisions in a distributed system (such as many networks that exist  
today - and I don't mean just the wires and equipment) is becoming  
more difficult, and finding someone who actually has wisdom (and can  
prevail over the masses) is harder still.
