Ask Robin Eckermann, the ex-Transact architect, now a professor at
University of Canberra
<http://www.infoage.idg.com.au/index.php/id;213397261;fp;4;fpid;71937704>.

By the way, it seems odd that the debate is only between old copper
telephone wire and new fibre optic cable. Why not new copper cable?
This would remove the need for modems at each end. As I recall
Transact had outdoor cable rated to Cat5e made for it to string from
electricity poles down Canberra backyards.

In Samoa, they used ordinary indoor Cat5 cable on poles in the main
street <http://www.tomw.net.au/2005/emuseums/>. But it only lasts a
few years in the tropical environment.
