The default background colour for an area without a style is Blue 8.
This is actually seen as a feature, see OOo bug 41101.

Mark the area. Format | Area; Area | Fill. Set Fill to None.
Alternatively, and better, apply a style and set the Fill to None in
the stylesheet.
