Other linkers may have better information. The first divestiture was 
competition for long distance, local loop services, and the allowance 
of people and organisations to own their own infrastructure and 
connect to the PTSN. My college system was the largest telephone 
operator in the state at one time -- running internal comms on an 
owned/licensed microwave network. But that's history. I believe 
what's happening now is re-aggregation in some areas -- buyouts, etc. 
But that's about all I know. The pendulum is swinging back. But there 
won't be a single monopoly again.
