I use this slide to explain it by example:

URL (Universal Resource Locator/ion):
http{s}://host{:port-number}{/path{/{filename}}}

URI (Universal Resource Identifier):
service://host{:port-number}{/path{/{filename}}}
incl. ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc3371.txt, i.e. not just http(s)

[Achtung:  the syntax of the above is indicative not disciplined!]
