Roger you raise an interesting point.  However, there is a difference 
between anonymity meeting a person in a pub and not knowing their 
name, and 500 people on a web site using aliases or fake names for 
the purpose of creating harm.

The guy in the pub isn't "anonymous" entirely.  You can see and feel him.

In a chat room or forum with 500 people, 490 of them might be the same person!
