I read an article on some website this week [op-ed in the Age 
perhaps?] by a medical researcher bemoaning the fact that research so 
often is done merely to get papers published [counts, not results = 
grants to keep programs going!]. Forty years between some discoveries 
and implementation. Examples given were the use of aspirin to reduce 
heart attack, relationship of smoking to lung disease, and a couple 
others. The author seemed disenchanted with the whole thing as a result.
