I installed IE8, but it didn't like some of my browser addons (and kept 
nagging me about them) so I uninstalled it. IE7 magically reappeared 
without any reinstallation. Then again, I already have XP SP3.

What MS seems to be saying is that if you install a major OS update after 
installing a beta version of a component then you might have trouble going 
back two steps. I would almost bet money that the final version of IE8 
will not have this problem (but I've got a stand-alone installation file 
for IE7 handy just in case).
