 Hi,

I'd like to know what is the best authority with regards to internet
usage stats in Australia. Are there public stats that reveal
connection type as in DSL vs Cable Modem vs Wireless? (WiMax deployed
anywhere?)

This "e-brief" is eight years old
http://www.aph.gov.au/LIBRARY/intguide/SP/Australiainternet.htm

The most recent data I found is dated late 2007
http://www.internetworldstats.com/sp/au.htm

Shows all broadband numbers as DSL. I take it, then, that cable modem
access is not very popular?

This adds some data on cablemodems
http://www.reuters.com/article/pressRelease/idUS10020+26-Feb-2008+BW20080226

"In September 2007 Telstra BigPond switched on its upgraded consumer
cable broadband
service, called BigPond Cable Extreme with download speeds of up to
30Mb/s, however has not announced any plans for a full upgrade to the
DOCSIS 3.0 standard. By December 2007 Optus had upgraded its cable
network, with speeds now reaching up to 20 Mb/s in Sydney, Melbourne
and Brisbane."

But unfortunately no stats on the market share of cable vs DSL, which
is what I'm looking for.

Yes, I could keep googling, but since this is a list of experienced
people, and most of you well, live down there, I'm sure some could
come up with first-hand comments like "I've had access to those stats
and the numebers are 70-30% for DSL and cable respectively" and the
like.

In any case, I'll appreciate any comments.

Thanks,
FC
