in other words, the Streisand Effect[1] pre-dates both the internet and
Barbara Streisand by at least 200 years? and it probably wouldn't be
hard to find examples dating back at least another millenia or two (the
Roman suppression of Christianity, for example, could hardly be called a
resounding success).
