This is a bit like Britain noticing just before WWII that it relies on  
merchant shipping for most of its food and other supplies, and  
especially for oil, and yet has insufficient naval capability to  
defend all the ships against German U-Boats. "Get rid of shipping and  
the whole game plan changes."

Yes, it does. It propels us into a weird idealised fantasy world which  
just happens to be completely unachievable.

Or, "Get rid of Microsoft" and there's no organised facility to  
maintain the complex software which underpins half the planet. It'd  
fall apart in about a month.
