As technology based systems become more complex, CS students seem to
becoming less widely educated, are focussed on the internet and less
able to understand the complexity of modern systems.

And I bet very few of them can even spell OLTP, let alone know what it
means - and I am not referring to what the letters stand for.

And just think, Bill Gates was raised on BASIC, and look at what he has
left the world.

Computer Science Education:
Where Are the Software Engineers of Tomorrow?

It is our view that Computer Science (CS) education is neglecting basic
skills, in particular in the areas of programming and formal methods. We
consider that the general adoption of Java as a first programming
language is in part responsible for this decline. We examine briefly the
set of programming skills that should be part of every software
professional’s repertoire.
