   The goal seems to me to be eminently reasonable.  A similar process used to be employed to track individual parts of jet engines and their engineering history through overhaul cycles, and probably still is.

   But I agree with Bernard Robertson-Dunn.  I'd go for a solution which is as low-tech as possible, and a database in which each item is identified by a serial number seems appropriate.  This could be extended to include the solar PV cells and other components & subsystems, not to mention daily peak & average power demand if required.
