I think it's misquoted, Jan: the Daily Telegraph article mentions that
Google invented Gmail IM, that's all.
But other than that, this is hardly brain surgery. My mail client
(forget the server for a moment) allows me to only check mail once an
hour, and of course I can always turn it OFF - I can also script it
easily enough to only be available for certain periods, too. I do the
same with the phone when I'm coding - no distractions makes for faster/
better code.
I think that you'll find that Larry Ellison implemented this at Oracle
a long time ago (not sure if it's still de rigeur). It's actually not
that difficult to do this in virtually any enterprise system - all
that's required is the will to do so.
Then there is web-based mail for those that can't live without POP/
IMAP - a different kettle of fish altogether.
