Not the experience that my 2nd-year son has had to date. He uses a  
Mac, and has had no problems, though he has moved most of his content  
over onto his iPod for listening whilst bike-riding etc.

Maybe different colleges (the old faculties) do it differently?

I'm amazed that people still have to use Real Audio Player, given its  
9% marketshare (2006 figures).

There are other 'can-opener' apps that can handle most things, as  
others have alluded to: just depends on your OS of choice, I guess.
