FTTP (Fibre to the premises) is good enough. Down here on the other side of
the globe we have firms like IPlan.com.ar which lay fibre backbone on
sidewalks, then the connection from a box in the sidewalk to the customer
premises is done using Cisco's Long Reach Ethernet (LRE) and now VDSL.
