About six years ago I worked for a Very Large Multinational on a project to implement server farms at various of their sites around the world, including one in Sydney.  I developed a spreadsheet based business model for the local enterprise and worked on its technical architecture & implementation.

I think it's a good idea, but the interacting architecture, business model and potential market needs to be very carefully thought through.  For example, there's a fairly obvious trade-off between the cost savings which can be gained from common infrastructure, the degree of technical & management complexity (and maybe potential legal liability!), and the marketing flexibility.
