Indeed.
So I figured I do some searching on Google to see
what else exists. I ended up on a path of learning
different to what I had intended, but fascinating
all the same.
I started with the following keywords:
kevin rudd internet filtering alp.org.au
So I start scanning my first page of results and
noticed the following notification at the end of
the results list:
"In response to a legal request submitted to Google, we
have removed 3 result(s) from this page. If you wish,
you may read more about the request at ChillingEffects.org."
With Google providing the following link:
Child Pornography Complaint in Google Search
http://www.chillingeffects.org/notice.cgi?sID=1161
At this site you will find a letter, with specific personal
details removed, stating:
"Google has received notice of a list of web sites
from the Internet Watch Foundation (web site URL)
that contain child pornography. Google has removed
the related web sites from its search results."
What's the current assessment of the Internet Watch
Foundation ( http://www.iwf.org.uk/ )?
Would it make more sense for our government to leverage
this kind of approach, or even hook in with that effort
which seems to be more focussed on the "dob in illegal
activity" that can be acted upon by IT companies and
law enforcement agencies, than the more pie in the sky
"clean feed content" goal? Or am I just naive?
The IWF site has a link to the things they *don't* cover,
which tells you where to go and also seems a reasonable
listing of the various online issues that exist for
policy makers.

For reference, here are *some* previous postings
to Link that mention IWF, which all seem to
be earlier than 2002 from my minor efforts:
