Hi Roger,
The rise and fall of BBSs would also be worthwhile mentioning.
For a few years FIDOnet was the may many of us sent e-mail.
It was revolutionary in the sense that e-mail wasn't
just for work anymore.
Hotmail would also be worth a mention. For a long time e-mail
addresses were precious things, and strongly tied to your
employer. With Hotmail you could have a permanent e-mail
address you could use from anywhere. Or, because they
weren't precious anymore, a temporary throw-away address.
I've noticed an interesting trend with work e-mail. For a
long time employers have cracked down on people using
their work e-mail system for personal purposes. But the
personal e-mail systems are so much easier to use than
corporate systems (good web interfaces, huge mailboxes,
etc) that I've now seen pleading from audit-concerned managers
for people not to use personal e-mail for work purposes.
Cheers, Glen
