Access to critical services is certainly a key issue with mobiles and with
the trends being observed in the USA for mobile only homes, the issue will
become more and more pronounced one would imagine.
Nielsen Mobile has recently released a white paper where they estimate
about 17.1% of US homes to be mobile only homes as at June 2008.
They also examine those households that had "cut the cord" but returned to
a land line, with reasons including fax, back to base alarms and DSL
access. About 10% cited reliability concerns in relation to things like
calling 911.
