Reuse of content came up early on in the Web. Frames were used to  display ads
around other people's websites.

Presumeably if an individual joins a Yahoo or Google email and mailing list then
they agree to their  posting carrying advertising.

For my part, I would be happy for Tony/ANU (as the owners) to put ads on the 
Link Archive.
However, I am less enthusiastice about joining Yahoo or Google groups.
