Perhaps there is another effect relating to writing software ... or
not.
I began my career as a programmer and of course have advanced into
analysis and design and (urgh) some management over the years. But
that aside, I find that there seems to be less of a need to write
new software these days and more demand for systems administration
and software deployment and integration.
This could be due to the network effect of open source - all the
work I do is in that realm.
Often any programming I do is of a customisation nature or to fix
bugs and add enhancements to existing software.
The commercial reality for me is that it is far easier to find clients
who want (and can afford) existing FOSS installed and customised compared
to the few that want to write systems from scratch.
Of course I am speaking from the perspective my own isolated little
part of the IT world.
