It's a shame, for all the credit I gave the Government the other day
they are still doing the:
Let's pretend to get involved and obtain feedback from users.
Here is the same question ten times, worded slightly differently, vote
for yes for any one of them and we will have a mandate to control your
internet.
Smart Networks to me equal control.
For example - what does the following mean?
"Can we achieve immediate and long term net benefits, including reduced
urban congestion, by introducing and enhancing smarter transport
systems?""
Smarter - how?
Smarter scheduled arrival?
Smarter traffic management rescheduling?
Air-conditioning on hot days?
I repeat - Smarter how.
And what the hell has it got to do with the NBN?
"Road congestion, water management and energy efficiency are three key
infrastructure challenges for the immediate future. Will the National
Broadband Network provide a platform for addressing these challenges?"
OK - how is the NBN going to manage a Dam that is full?
Will it automatically rescind the "water your plants legislation" and
cancel all fines?
No - I didn't think so.
The NBN has nothing to do with water control.
Telemetry from our reservoirs have been available via web since 1995. (I
know - we [Ausnet] won the tender to design the system).
Road Congestion - well that's a given but seeing most people are already
in their cars when an accident happens, surely this is a GPS/Phone
application and not an NBN. (Yes yes, Telecommuting/working will
alleviate road congestion. But again, it has nothing to do with a
"SMART" Network.
Energy efficiency? Well Alcatel were carrying out smart grid meter
reading for electricity demand predictions (and billing) in 1986 - it
doesn't seem to have been adopted anywhere......
Again, what has this got to do with the NBN ?
All of these items appear to be designed to be able to bill utilities on
an as used real-time basis - and as such I have no objection to their
implementation - but let's get real, it has nothing to do with a
nationwide network.
One is infrastructure and the other is services to pay for that
infrastructure.
Scratch my comment from the other day - someone in Canberra is thinking
alright - but with YOUR pockets.
114 votes on 12 ideas from 27 people
Smart Network indeed - Bull.
Although I look forward to seeing how many more ideas can be posted in
the less than 24 hours left to participate.
It's kinda how you know the Government are only going through the
motions and don't really care about the feedback - when they post
something for feedback and then give you next to no time to respond.
