As I understand it the zone system on
Sydney Buses works on the basis that if
you get caught, by an inspector, with an
invalid ticket (based on the stamp when
you got on) you face the consequences.

The Sydney system might be time based
and the drivers have timing points to 
monitor
whether the buses are running on time.

The fares in Singapore seem
cheaper...and zone based too...
