And the answer is, 'No, it is just allowing us to do new things'.

Prior to the invention of writing people had to rely on memory.  And they did, developing wonderful skills to enhance and exploit memory.  A Homer (whoever he or they was/were) was able to produce 2*24 book epics using laboriously memorised stock phrases and techniques to combine and recombine them.  After the adoption of writing, that kind of poem could never be produced again.  But lots of others could.  

The sky is definitely not falling.
