Noone can do anything about d*ckheads that deliberately shut off one of
their most important senses (and distract themselves to boot) by piping
loud noise into their ear canals while they operate dangerous machinery.
People that do it on bicycles must have a deathwish.
But the European system switches the radio on, (switching to radio if
you were listening to a CD or something), raises the volume and gives
you the message, prefaces by a very annoying and difficult to overhear
high-pitched tootle. And then puts it all back the way it was, very
civilised :-)
I believe there are special adapters for deaf people now too, that
capture and display a digitally transmitted message as well, using the
same tech that lets modern car radios display song titles and stuff.
