hear! hear!
OTOH, while i've always been very good at filtering out my awareness
of the world around me when i'm concentrating on something (reading,
programming, "in the zone" geeking, or anything else requiring intense
focus), i quite enjoy having some good ambient or psytrance or similar
music playing while i'm in that state. it helps to either get me in to
that useful state or keep me there. that's about the only time i really
want music playing, though. otherwise i either don't care or find it
distracting and annoying.
on a related note: IMO, radios etc in cars should be banned, at any
volume. they distract the driver from their environment when they should
be paying full attention to the dangerous activity they are performing.
