A closely related malaise is the entrenched re-inventing of wheels in 
software development. Programmers generally have a widespread ignorance 
of what has gone before.  We'll never have a mature software engineering 
profession until practitioners develop a deeper commitment to re-use, 
and more respect for the historical corpus of knowledge.  But writing 
software is such irresistible fun that I fear it will remain stuck in a 
sort of guild mode forever.
