A closely related malaise is the entrenched re-inventing of wheels in
software development. Programmers generally have a widespread ignorance
of what has gone before. We'll never have a mature software engineering
profession until practitioners develop a deeper commitment to re-use,
and more respect for the historical corpus of knowledge. But writing
software is such irresistible fun that I fear it will remain stuck in a
sort of guild mode forever.
