Ericsson Demonstrates 500-Mbit/s DSL

Ericsson said this week that it has demonstrated 500-Mbits/s transmission
rates over copper cabling, using VDSL2-based modems.
The demonstration used line bonding of six copper lines, similar to the
line bonding used by the old 1288-Kbit "Shotgun" modems in the mid-1990s.
The specific implementation Ericsson demonstrated should be completed by
the end of 2009, the company said.
However, the demonstration is a continued step forward for DSL
technology, which is more prevalent than cable in European countries
where small towns are often clustered around a central switching office.
The "vectorized" VDSL2 technology is suitable for fiber extensions,
combining fiber and last-mile copper for backhauling, Ericsson said.
"This demonstration confirms Ericsson's leadership in broadband access
technology and our commitment to the continued research and development
of DSL technology to improve operators' business with new access
solutions," said Håkan Eriksson, chief technical officer at Ericsson, in
a statement.
"It also proves Ericsson's abilities to provide future mobile
backhauling, which will enable quick and cost-effective introduction of
Long Term Evolution (LTE) solutions."
Ericsson said that the VDSL2 technology's bandwidth was a natural fit for
video-on-demand services.
