I first came across it when playing with Packet Radio on 147 Mhz with  
a few other local Hams in 89.  I was a student at the Uni of Canberra  
and was using the ftp-email facility to download Phil Karn's Net  
software from UCSD in California which we used to transfer files  
across 1200 baud half duplex radio links across Canberra.  It was slow  
enough that we could actually follow the protocol in action!  learnt  
heaps...
