Blocking the net - will it make kids any safer? Australian current
affairs forum program, presented by Jenny Brockie. (An SBS Television
production, in English) CC WS http://www.sbs.com.au/schedule/2009-03-31
Insight Overview: http://news.sbs.com.au/insight/episode/index/id/59
Should the government have control over what we view online?
The federal government is pushing ahead with its plans to make ISP
filtering compulsory. If it's successful, Australia will be the only
western democracy to implement a mandatory filter on the internet.
The government argument is that a filter will make the internet more
family friendly, protecting kids, and will restrict only the very worst
online content. But critics have slammed the proposal as China-style
censorship.
Those who support the filtering process say that content should be
treated like any other media and that ISP's have to take greater
responsibility for the products they host.
Don't miss Insight as we bring together Government, industry, parents and
kids and civil libertarians to thrash out the consequences of blocking
the net.
