There was, and the consensus seems to be that RealPlayer is Teh Evil™  
whereas somehow everyone else with vaguely similar policies, like  
Apple with Quicktime, is not.

Nevertheless, as Pia Waugh pointed out, there IS the VLC open source  
player for Windows, OS X, Linux and others, available at http://www.videolan.org/
