It's a marketing proposition. That, and the .com space is too crowded.  
There are many reasons for wanting to exploit the local marketing  
space. It's like phone numbers - a local number suggests that you live  
in the place, know the market, etc.

I'm not so sure that Linkers are in favour of dropping .au - but maybe  
it's not just my hearing that is going.
