These tend to be only done once per weekday. Each bank collates a list of
transactions for the counter party and then exchanges the data and a net
settlement.
If you've ever transferred to or from a smallish bank / credit union /
building society it can sometimes take multiple days which I presume, but
haven't been able to confirm, is a delay induced by exchange thresholds.
