When I was at Sensis, this is exactly how they did it. Our laptops were
tightly policy controlled so individuals, even those with local admin
rights, could not choose to have automatic updates.  The help desk would
download distributable versions of patches and push them to our machines
during business hours, usually mid-day. We would get several hours notice of
this including whether a reboot would be needed.
