The S&P 500 is NOT a measure of Market Cap. It's a measure of the value of
the shared that are available to be publicly traded, and is not in any real
sense a true measure of the value of the company. Market capitalization is
clearly defined as being based on the number of shares outstanding, and not
just those that are available to be publicly traded.
According to Google Finance, the numbers are :
MSFT - 8.77B shares @ 30.99 = $271.80B
APPL - 909.64M shares @ 270.83 = $246.36B
