Here's my 1c worth (it probably isn't worth the full 2c)

Democracy isn't about voting or decisions it's about responsibility.

Democracy works by the citizenship appointing representatives who
temporarily are responsible for conducting affairs of the state. They
are given certain powers in order to discharge this responsibility and
they are regularly called to account.

Elections are the mechanisms by which a) the representatives are
identified and b) are held to account.

Representative Democracy is an oxymoron.

The citizenship voting on decisions takes responsibility away from the
representatives but doesn't allocate it sufficiently well to the
citizenship. California is a prime example of how badly this can go wrong.

Technology may be a solution but nobody has explained to me what the
problem is.
