Sorry Jim - when I wrote 'print', I mean the end product, not the technology or workflow used to get to that point (wearing my publisher's hat, not my IT hat).
In the context of this discussion, I put PDFs into the category of digital media.
When it comes to print media, the distinction I was making is that once printed, it's done and dusted (with all the inherent pre-press problems in the hand-off, and in the print press output). The end-user expectations are fairly well defined - i.e. ink and media must be durable and fit for purpose, content must be readable.
When it comes to digital media, the end-user might have a multitude of uses and desires of what to do with it.
