It looks like the software may be DOS rather than DDOS, i.e. each 
participant bombards the target with packets that contain their own, 
easily-traceable IP-address.

If so, then the arms race will proceed quickly, with the couple of 
hundred stayers among the (million?!) members arming themselves with 
cyberwarfare-grade software that at least spoofs the IP-address but 
more likely harnesses existing botnets or establishes new ones in 
order to mount the attacks.
